It’s back-to-school season and fall is on the horizon! It won’t be long until the freshly-sharpened pencils move over for fall icons, like apples, pumpkins and cinnamon! Get in the spirit of the season with August and September’s trivia below.

Team Trivia – August

  1. It’s back-to-school season!  When you hear the term one-room schoolhouse, what is the first thing you imagine?
  2. How do one-room schoolhouses compare with modern homeschooling?  How do they compare with modern public schooling?
  3. Are there still one-room schoolhouses in operation in the United States?
  4. One-room schoolhouses gradually died away (for the most part) in the United States throughout the first part of the 20th century.  What big (think “world-wide”) event happened in the 1940s that spurred many rural people to move to the bigger cities?  Why would this migration of people from the country-areas to the urban-areas spell the end of an era for one-room schoolhouses?

Team Trivia – September

  1. What was Johnny Appleseed’s real name?
  2. Johnny Appleseed was a deeply religious man, specifically following the teachings of which Christian denomination?
  3. Because of his religious beliefs, Johnny Appleseed did not believe in grafting (a horticultural technique required to make apples edible).  Because he only planted apple trees from seed, the apples harvested from his nurseries could not be eaten.  What were they used for instead?
  4. Watch this video clip from the 1948 Disney movie Melody Time.  What are some differences between the legend of Johnny Appleseed and his real-life story?
