World War I Comes to Belle Meade Plantation
On February 21, 2017
On April 6, 1917, America joined what would be called the “Great War” and plans for a military training camp located in the yet undeveloped Belle Meade community took form. Join us at Belle Meade Plantation as we commemorate the centennial anniversary of this moment in American history with a World War I Fair. The fair will premier a new exhibit about Camp Andrew Jackson, a Nashville military training camp located on what would become the grounds of the Warner Parks. This all day event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will feature reenactors running drills similar to those conducted at Camp Andrew Jackson. Visitors are invited to enjoy educational stations dedicated to war propaganda, the changing role of women, the war effort at home and other subjects. This family friendly presentation is included with a Grounds Ticket ($12) and open to the public. At 12:00 p.m. a flag raising ceremony will officially announce the debut of the Camp Andrew Jackson exhibition. Click Here to purchase a Grounds Ticket for Belle Meade Plantation.
About the Exhibition
The location of Camp Andrew Jackson was originally included in the Belle Meade Plantation property owned by the Hardings and the Jackson Family. The new outdoor exhibition will center on the changing landscape of Belle Meade during the early 20th century and feature a training trench, flag pole and interpretive panels that describe Camp Andrew Jackson, Nashville and Belle Meade during the time of the Great War.
